  BFYP Collection
Rock & Roll Radio Surveys (1954-1959)
Featured (monthly) Survey

In the fall of 2009 while I was still interviewing and researching for BFYP, I discovered a March 1, 1967 KFRC / San Francisco music survey that had miraculously survived in great shape through 42 years of gypsy meandering. That was an aha! moment. Not only would collecting radio surveys be valuable for research, but I thought those with the pictures of "my" DJs in their heyday would be great fun for the book, this website, and you!

I turned to eBay and discovered a whole community of buyers and sellers of these eclectic pieces of paper, once distributed FREE at our local record shops. That any of them have survived those years is nothing short of individual miracles. But what fun they are -- seeing Cousin Bruce Morrow or Ron Riley on late 1950s/early '60s surveys is pure joy. It just makes me smile to look at Wolfman Jack in all his glory in the early '70s on a KISN / Portland survey; and it sends me back to yesteryear and the "groovy" days, checking out Dr. Don Rose on a 1968 WFIL / Philly survey, before he skipped across the country to KFRC. What fun!

At first I just watched the buying and selling action on eBay and enjoyed some of the very detailed and informative descriptions; but soon, another 1967 KFRC survey caught my eye. The May music chart touted an ad for the upcoming Fantasy Fair and Magic Fountain Music Festival at the top of Mt. Tamalpais near San Francisco. I was there. How could I not bid? I gave in to temptation ... it's mine.

By mid-November I had begun trading regularly on eBay. Warning! Buying on eBay can be addictive and detrimental to the health of your budget! But it's oh, so much fun. I am now considered a "collector," with more than 200 surveys - several of which you will see in the full-throttle version of Blast from Your Past! (1954-1979). Though I'm small potatoes compared to some collectors - like my friends, Jack (eBay seller, RockAndRollNeverForgets, who has thousands), or George (eBay seller, georgej.) - I've filled a half-dozen 3" binders with surveys from 1956 to 1979 and beyond! And we won't even talk about the other little articles of memorabilia, like a "Light My Fire" cigarette lighter in the shape of a vintage jukebox, or the 1963-model Cadillac El Dorado convertible transistor radio!

But the surveys are my book "candy." They are visual reminders of the wild-n-crazy days we had and belie our bathroom mirrors - we're still just sixteen. :-)

Click here for a page of surveys and treats that I wanted to include in the ebook version of BFYP's first five years, but the technology is just not quite there yet. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do - and they won't cost you a dime!

My original: KFRC / San Francisco, March 1, 1967
Notice the "Big Hitbounds" tune, "Western Union."
Look for an unbelievable story about the band Five Americans, in the full-throttle edition of BFYP! (Thanks for the interview, Mike Rabon!)

(The survey is unfolded to show both front/back and full interior chart.)

More to come!
