Wearin’ the Green & Rockin’ Out to Golden Oldies!  

Have you ever wished you could go back to where you started from, oh, so many years ago?  

With that provocative query, let’s just say that I managed to finish the text of our March article, but the images will take a tad longer. In the meantime, use your imagination, your memories, or make something up! Rock Radio History, though, is the important part, right? Enjoy … 

As I was cruising down Memory Lane, it was a perplexing toss-up to choose March’s Featured Radio Survey! Originally, I wanted to go with WHYI/Ft.Lauderdale, Florida, because it’s the only music chart I have for that station, and a fun one!  

But when I saw KERN/Bakersfield, California’s, survey with a “Junk Food” crossword puzzle we can all have fun with, I had to go with the Middle Earth in California. That’s what we Bay Area brats called Bakersfield, Fresno, Stockton, Sacramento and all the farm towns of Cally’s Central Valley.
       That isn’t all for this month though. We have another WTAC/Flint, Michigan, music chart for March, right on the heels of February’s WTAC Featured Radio Survey posting.
       Busy month with three vintage Rock Radio surveys! So let’s have some Rockin’ fun … 50 Years Ago this Month …   

º MARCH 1976 Radio News & Muse ♪ 

What was your fave DJ playing when you turned on your tinny transistor radio 50 Years Ago? Our radio stations were the center of our musical world. What we heard and loved on the air, is what we bought to slap on the ol’ turntable, to keep our world spinning.
       Wanna know a secret? Vinyl record sales, both new and vintage records, have been climbing again, to its highest in two decades! Vinyl Sales Rose For The 19th Consecutive Year in 2025, screams the headline in the Cue Burn newsletter article on Vinyl Alliance’s Substack, February 26, 2026. Who’d a-thunk it back in the day when Pop, Rock, Heavy Metal and Disco were still evolving?! 
       Let’s enjoy the memories of what and who you were listening to … 50 Years Ago this Month! 

March 7^th: To you, it may have been an average day 50 Years Ago (or not even born yet!), but to Elton John, it isn’t every day one is immortalized in wax. Especially at London’s famed Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. Although the Beatles beat him to the honor of being the first Rock-themed display, in 1964 (says SuperSeventies), there hadn’t been another until the Rocket Man zoomed in. Now he has several and the latest in 2024 is downright supersonic … or so I hear. Never had the pleasure.  

March 9^th: Unfortunately for Keith Moon of The Who, this date in 1976 was not his finest hour. But then, by this time, he’d been destroying his finest hours for about ten years. Unable to continue after only two songs, he caused their Boston Garden appearance to be rescheduled for the next night. It didn’t help … the whole US tour was ultimately delayed after he demolished his hotel room and landed himself in the hospital. Sadly, Moon battled alcoholism to the point of self-destruction. “… notorious as ‘Moon The Loon’, [he was] the incorrigible clown who respected no authority whatsoever and never knew the meaning of the word embarrassment.” After more tries and fails, Keith Moon died in September 1978, in the same London flat where the Mamas & Papas’ Cass Elliot died, both at the age of 32.  

March 20^th: It was today in 1976, that “Rhiannon,” a tune written and sung by Stevie Nicks and released with Fleetwood Mac in February, hopped on the KERN/Bakersfield, California, chart on its way up to the Top Ten. Of our three featured music charts for March, only KERN already saw its potential. DYK moments … It’s reported (unsubstantiated) that Stevie was a hit hostess at a Bob’s Big Boy hamburger joint before her phenomenal singer-songwriter achievements! Part of her success no doubt came from an active imagination. Reportedly, she read about Rhiannon, a dynamic figure in Welsh mythology, and became enamored of her. In the song, “Rhiannon,” was she revealing something about herself as well? ♪ …  She rings like a bell through the night | And wouldn't you love to love her? | She rules her life like a bird in flight | And who will be her lover? …  ♪   

March 26^th: Love the title of the new album Wings released on this day … Wings at the Speed of Sound. It does rather boost the ethereal image, doesn’t it? All set to promote the album in McCartney’s first US tour in a decade, they were delayed after the final show in Paris. Guitarist, Jimmy McCulloch, broke a finger slip-sliding on his hotel bathroom floor. Kind of a bad whoopsie!    

March 29^th: Reminiscing over the past brought a certified gold honor to the Four Seasons’ first #1 hit since 1964. Appropriately titled, "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," it deserved the distinction, still riding high on Radio charts. The tune jumped four spots from the week before to #4 at KERN/Bakersfield, while earlier in the month, Ft. Lauderdale’s WHYI listeners set it at #3, and it hit #2 at WTAC/Flint, Michigan.  

Speaking of WTAC, were you there when DJ Peter C. Cavanaugh was best buds with The Who and flaunted The Who by Numbers album, to the delight of their listeners? WTAC ran a coveted contest for “The Who and San Francisco too!!!” trip featured in their March 12, 1976, Radio survey. The caricature style is quintessential 1970s’ art. “Squeeze Box” from the album was a hit on both WHYI & WTAC music charts this month. “The Big 600” made their mark on Pop & Rock until early 1980s when you could still hear Stevie Nicks, if you liked WTAC’s switch to Country. (Think her ’82 hit, “Leather and Lace.”)  

Next, let’s cruise the ol’ surf bus from Michigan all the way down to South Florida, as we peek into the studio at WHYI-FM/Ft. Lauderdale. Who was your fave DJ while tanning on the beach? If you didn’t have a job, it was likely Bill Tanner (1945-2021), who liked to tease listeners with, “Get up and get off with Tanner in the Morning.” The longtime area DJ helped homegrown artists like KC and the Sunshine Band (on the March charts with “Queen of Clubs”) and loved his listeners. Bill honed his relatable and knowledgeable broadcast skills from the start, at thirteen years old; and before he even arrived in Florida, was recognized as an innovative format developer.
       Y-100’s March 20, 1976 “official music sheet #95” flaunted its artistic prowess for listeners as they dove headlong into Disco, keeping “Disco Lady” by “Johnny” (Johnnie) Taylor at #1 for a second week. 

Hoping the exhaust-chugging bus will hold together, we trek cross-country, from the right coast to the left coast, stopping in the rural countryside of middle California. What’s so great about KERN/Bakersfield that it’s this month’s Featured Radio Survey? The March 20, 1976, music chart boasts more great artwork and a Junkfood Crossword Puzzle! Just too good to past up! DJ Mark Thomas invites you to solve the puzzle—and so do I! Print it and have fun wallowing in nostalgia as you munch on some junk food. Trust me, you’ll want to by the time you solve it!
       “Mark Thomas” may be a case of Radio’s annoying DJ aliases habit. I couldn’t find the name in research, not as a DJ in general, or specific to KERN, so let me know if you know his story!  

♪ March 1976 Song of Note ♪  

Sometimes when you have an urge to write, it doesn’t matter where you are, but who you’re thinking about could be of utmost importance and just won’t wait. Write it now! Even if it’s on the way to the hospital to be with your wife when your daughter’s born!
       That’s how we came to know Pierre Tubbs and J. Vincent Edwards’ poignant hit (recorded by Maxine Nightingale), “Right Back Where We Started From,” this month’s Song of Note and #7 on KERN’s featured survey. History says the title was created a long while before the lyrics were penned. But inspiration for the song in totality struck in less than ten minutes while the duo raced to the hospital for Pierre’s family. Can’t you just imagine how the urgency of the moment—and reports hinting at wedded bliss distress—may have prompted Pierre’s creativity.
       Talk about dedicated to work—a rough demo was cut the very next day. ♪ … Love is good, love can be strong | We gotta get it right back to where we started from … ♪   

♪ March 2026 Music Events & More ♪    
The music world—and indeed, all of us who love music—is still talking about Neil Sedaka (1939-2026), who passed away on February 27, 2026. As a child, Sedaka asked his mother to buy him a piano and at nine years old, began serious classical piano training at the Julliard School. The rest of his life was dedicated to music and performing. Do you remember, “Breaking Up is Hard To Do”? It’s #14 on WHYI/
Ft. Lauderdale’s March 20, 1976 Radio survey. ♪ … Don't take your love away from me | Don't you leave my heart in misery | If you go then I'll be blue | Cause breaking up is hard to do …  ♪     

March 29^th: Speaking of the piano, where would we be without it?! Celebrating the instrument so many musicians begin their love of music with, it’s World Piano Day! Imagine Rock & Roll without the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Rocket Man, Elton John, or the Piano Man, Billy Joel. Nevermind, I don’t even want to think about it. PianoDay.org has the scoop on today’s celebrating, which “… takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated.” Go before today and learn how you can join the celebration. In the meantime, listen to a hit piano tune still lingering on this month’s Top 30 charts, “I Write the Songs,” by Barry Manilow.

MARCH 20, 1976 ~ KERN/Bakersfield, California … I’ve written about KERN DJ Russ Gerber in past articles, so this month, it’s a focus on its connection with listeners. Radio stations had more gimmicks than we can count. Concerts, contests, and crossword puzzles! Problem is, not all 1976 music charts survived the years, and I’ve not been able to locate the one for the week after our featured KERN survey, to retrieve answers to the March 20^th puzzle! Rock Radio 50 Years Ago ~ November 1975

Thank You For Stopping By. Now Fly, Robin, Fly!  

We’re Rockin’ on into the month of gratitude. Yet, in these tumultuous times, we may not feel thankful for much. Granted, our national pain is palpable. And while we may not be able to sit down this Thanksgiving to a dinner with all the trimmings, we can still be thankful for what is before us, and what offers a smile. Rock & Roll is good for that!  

As I worked on this article in the final days of October, I was reminded one particular day, of the unexpected things in life that bring joy. I wrote, looking ahead to November, trying not to be downcast and decided some upbeat Jimmy Buffett tunes might help soothe my savage soul. Songs You Know By Heart (1985) was perfect.

About halfway through the album, I kept hearing this little chirp and I knew it wasn’t Jimmy’s parrot, so I got up and looked down through the panoramic window, to see an adorable little robin redbreast* about four feet to my left, at the edge of the window ledge (about 18” down). I tapped on the window … (*And if it isn’t a robin, please let me know!) 

To my amazement, she cocked her head at the sound and walked over to stand in front of me. We looked at each other and I chattered at her for a few seconds. She just stood there staring at me. Then I began to sing along with Buffett’s “Pencil Thin Mustache.” My eyes widened as she perked up and began fluffing her feathers!

I sang to her through two more songs before we both seemed to tire. I am often visited by birds, but never had one stick around for nine minutes. It was a magical moment that renewed my spirit and led me to this month’s vintage Song of Note: “Fly, Robin, Fly!”

I hope you’ll forgive that rather long intro, but the timing and the song were just too good not to share. I hope you smiled. Now, let’s flip on the mic & see what’s happening … 50 Years Ago this Month …

Disco music was gaining ground, though radio station surveys were more a melody mix than ever. This tune took a change of voice and three years to make it to Rock & Roll …

November 15^th: A Country Crossover favorite was released today 50 Years Ago … "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," was written and recorded by Ed Bruce and his wife, Patsy. How well we know the tune, right? Just not this year. It made a splash on the Country charts, even garnering attention of the Western Writers of America, naming the tongue-and-cheek tune as one of their Top 100 Western Songs. But it didn’t hit the big time and cozy up to Rock & Roll until its 1978 release by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

♪ On Your Tinny Transistor Radio ♪  
So, Oldies lovers, where were you alive and doin’ the jive in November 1975? Oh, not alive yet? That’s OK, we love the company and though Kansas City (MO) and Pittsburgh (PA) Rocked great Radio, we’re back to NorCal for more comic chuckles. Don your cool new mood ring and check out a sample of what and who you were listening to …

We start on the hip East Coast with WKTQ/Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For you night owls, DJ Brother Al is behind the mic from 2-6a.m. and their Top Thirty from November 15, 1975, shows they’re a tad ahead of the music curve. WKTQ fans already bumped tunes to the top that are still climbing elsewhere in the country. #1 is KC & the Sunshine Band’s “That’s The Way I Like It,” with Elton John’s “Island Girl” sitting comfy at #2, and our Song of Note at #3, Silver Convention’s “Fly, Robin, Fly.”

Let’s take a Rockin’ shuttle over to Kansas City, Missouri’s, KBEQ where DJ Mike O’Brien spins their Top Thirty tunes for your 6-10a.m. morning drive, November 21, 1975. “That’s The Way I Like It” (K.C. & the Sunshine Band*) also grabbed #1 in the Midwest, while kicking Elton John’s former topper, “Island Girl,” to #2 and keeping Morris Albert’s “Feelings” at #3. Were you there for the hyped rod & custom car, motorcycle and van show Thanksgiving weekend? Vroom! (* If you noted the difference in “KC” and “K.C.”, good eye! Two different surveys spelled it two different ways.)

Then it’s a long leap to the West Coast where you may recall KERN/Bakersfield, California’s, September cartoon fun with Issue #3. They’re back with this month’s Issue #11 for November 7, 1975. And yep, DJs J.J. Jackson & Russ Gerber are still up to no good and their cartoon capers prove it. Joining  them this month is news guy, John Q. Lawrence. With Burger King sponsoring a Super School contest and Royal Print & Copy supplying the corny comics, I’m sure listeners loved the antics as they Rocked out to KERN. Which brings me to … 

♪ November ’75 Song of Note ♪   

Our vintage Song of Note this month has much to be thankful for … it made history for its artists, Silver Convention, by being only the second German group to make the top of American music charts at that time … and their decidedly disco song, “Fly, Robin, Fly” became a chart-topping tune with only six words. I kid you not. Few words but great beat!
       Their catchy tune stayed in the Top Ten at KERN until nearly New Year’s … a touch of trivia … it’s said the original title was “Run, Rabbit, Run.” Hmmmmm. And … 

♪ Quirky Band Name Award ♪    
I had to do it. More as an afterthought of the Song of Note, figured I’d throw in the trivia tidbit about Silver Convention’s name and tack on November’s Quirky Band Name Award. Why they came up with a rabbit for their hit tune’s original title, I have no idea, as their name has always been about birds. Early on they were known as Silver Bird Convention and sometimes, just Silver Bird.

Wednesday ~ November 26th: For those of you keeping tabs, even without a sponsor link, National Jukebox Day is worth a mention. It's always the day before Thanksgiving, which makes it fun to poke your musical memories while prepping for the holiday. The link above is for your enjoyment to learn the history of the iconic Jukebox. What were the top tunes on the Jukebox at your fave local dive bar 50 Years Ago? 
       Yep, though they originated in the early Twentieth Century, we still had Jukeboxes at nearly every watering hole in town throughout the ‘70s and even into the ‘90s. A few themed diners and specialty bars even today, house the big, bulky, but fun record players—or turned them into digital hybrids. Either way, they’re a hoot! Fun tip to display vintage items at home? Grab an eye-catching, collectable, diner-style tabletop jukebox, transistor radio, for a spotlight! I have several vintage Crosleys.

Rockin' Oldies in Fall Fame & Glory    

Complete September Edition! Here we go, Rock & Roll fans … slippin’ ‘n’ slidin’ into September, making it just a hop-skip-and-jump to the Holidays! Okay, okay, slippery slope aside, let’s enjoy this month, and all the amazing, iconic Rock & Roll that came with it … 50 Years Ago this Month …

Rockin’ news that was the news … as best I can. Though I labored this Labor Day with the aftereffects of the Summer broken toe, I’m finally moving on and making progress. Thanks for your understanding and let's get kickin' those Fall falling leaves! September 1, 1975, began with …

September 1^st: KOL-AM/Seattle, Washington, has had a long history of flipping and flopping and buying and selling, both before and after this date, when it slipped from progressive Rock to Country as KMPS. “Kountry Music Puget Sound” didn’t last either, as another (final?) sale prompted their call sign to eventually return as KKOL in 1997, and on-and-on-and on … the most comprehensive (and long) history of the station I found, is in the link in the first line. It is NOT however, a “secure” link. Use at your own risk.

September 10^th: Were you alive when the raucous KISS released their first live album, Alive? They certainly added to the excitement of 1975. Recorded May through July in four concerts during their Dressed To Kill Tour, it is their fourth album overall. But Alive churned the Rock & Roll waters eventually—after much overdubbing, according to some sources—capturing the essence of KISS that had been missing in previous studio albums. When released, Alive was panned, but time has been kind. Some suggest it heavily influenced Metal and Punk music and launched KISS into the big time.

September 12^th: A busy month for album releases as the incomparable Pink Floyd were nostalgic for their co-founder, Syd Barrett, peddling their 9^th album, Wish You Were Here. Again, time appears to be a factor in the album’s reception. At first considered unremarkable, it is now hailed as one of Rolling Stone’s listed 500 greatest albums ever. By September 25^th it had reached #1 in the US and certified gold in both UK and US by year’s end.

♪ On Your Tinny Transistor Radio ♪  
Where were you listening to September songs to remember in 1975? San Diego or Bakersfield, California? Whether West Coast or hearing the radio airwaves of the future echo across the country, here’s a sample of what and who you were listening to …

Along with WIBG/Philadelphia and WCFL/Chicago, I likely have more KCBQ/San Diego, California, vintage surveys than all the others combined. After all, I am a “California Girl” as the Beach Boys, once warbled. Point is, ya get another KCBQ “Q Hits” for September 1975.
       About this time, KCBQ seemed to be slowing down on the pop music. Their “plain” survey for September 8, 1975, “Card #231,” may be a precursor to their 1978 flip from Top 40 to adult contemporary … they never again quite reached their earlier fame. But the station is still revered by Rock & Roll Radio buffs and “the locals,” largely thanks to perennial local pop DJ, Shotgun Tom Kelly.

       The “Q Hits” survey still lists “The Top Selling Songs in San Diego,” along with top albums and a print-out of lyrics for the #1 hit, Bee Gee’s “Jive Talkin,” though no promos for station DJs, local concerts, or unique era art. Pretty boring, compared to … 

KERN Radio was hoppin’ in Bakersfield, California, with their September 12, 1975, hit music list and super-Psychedelic Seventies “Super Comics”! In the rare Issue #3, their artistic graphics story follows KERN’s DJ Jay J. Jackson as he toodles around the studio answering listeners’ calls and spinning the vinyls, with a little behind the scenes bumbling fun …
       What was it like in Bakersfield mid-1970s? About the same as a former DJs’ hilarious description when he snagged his first “real” job at KERN in 1971. Anyone remember Ken Stevens (Levine) or by his creative studio name, “Truck-Ken Stevens” on the air, before he became an Emmy winning writer?
       He described his query when told to send a demo tape to the program director, “I asked if I could drive up there and play it for him. With such a plum assignment as six hours a week on a station no one listened to in the middle of nowhere in sweltering summer heat for minimum wage I didn’t want to leave anything to chance.” Ken’s full article is nothing short of hilarious, especially if you know inland/central California. 
       Although Bakersfield’s KAFY radio is legendary, KERN was no slouch in attracting accolades, as one
of the first stations in the early ‘70s to air the iconic American Top 40 syndicated countdown show, with host, Casey Kasem. Program Director, Johnny Mitchell and Music Director, Phil Drake, likely had a hand in that coup. 
       DJ Russ Gerber is also shown lounging on the survey to hawk his 10a.m. to 3p.m. slot. If a listing on an old radio site is correct, KERN looks to be Russ’s first radio gig from 1972-1975. We’ll see him again in March 1976 (2026) as he “rustles up some music” for KERN listeners in survey Issue #28.
       Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any background listings for our September Super Comics hero, Jay J. Jackson. We know he remained spinning the classics in California’s Dust Bowl at least through Christmas, 1975, but beyond that, I could find no definitive information. There is another “Triple-J” early DJ—John Julian Jackson—but based on the survey comics image, KERN’s DJ isn’t Black nor could I find that the former MTV VJ ever worked at KERN. Anyone have any knowledge of our Featured Radio Survey DJ Jay J. Jackson? Let me know!

♪ September ’75 Song of Note ♪  

I rarely apply our monthly Song of Note to the #1 hit on the Featured Radio Survey, as it often gets lots of attention while it climbs the chart. However, I have a feeling radio listeners of the day were fascinated by David Bowie’s lament of “Fame,” if they ever bothered to actually listen to the lyrics.
       Bowie was so distraught about fame’s true status in life that he did what all songwriters do when the emotion of reality becomes overwhelming … he wrote a song about it. ♪ … Fame, it's not your brain, it's just the flame | That burns your change to keep you in... sane … ♪     
       Of course, our celebs today aren’t so subtle about the downfalls of fame … thanks to social media, barely a twinkle in a handful of tech wizards’ eyes in 1975, high-profile people now have a platform to cry openly about the vagaries of their rich, but lacking lives.
        For Bowie, he disguised displeasure with his business manager in song. Worded so we could all lament with him, it was still a bitter pill to swallow as he lost significant income on a doomed off-Broadway show his manager conceived, with the same title. That “Fame” closed after the first night.
       No less cynical in a 1990 interview, Bowie said of fame, “I've left all that behind me, now... I think fame itself is not a rewarding thing. The most you can say is that it gets you a seat in restaurants." I would say, chalk it up to a learning experience. Celeb or not, people are duped every day (now, moreso than ever!). For now, let's just sing along with the song …

♪ Quirky Band Name Award ♪ 
I’m resurrecting the Quirky Band Name Award for September, with three fun contenders: In a blending of Country Rock bands, Fatback and The Rhythm Aces, the Amazing Rhythm Aces built their fame on September’s #4 hit at KERN, “Third Rate Romance.” (The song also qualifies as a one-hit wonder.) Interesting, but not amazing.  
       Second thought, came with British glam Rock band, “Sweet,” who before they hit the big time was known as the Sweetshop (cute). In September ’75 KERN’s listeners bumped Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz” up to #16 (also considered by some to be a one-hit wonder), but not long after, they ran out of air with their final hit, “Love Is Like Oxygen,” in 1978.
       So here we are … “Holdin’ On To Yesterday” with Ambrosia, bestowed September 1975’s Quirky Band Name Award. Not only do they have an apropos tune to remember, but their band name took real thought … and a dictionary!
       Believe it or not, they began as “Ambergris Mite” which loosely defines as a waxy goo floating on tropical waters. Its redeeming feature was used in perfumery. What were they thinking? More astounding, there was already a band using “Amergris.” So they hauled out the dictionary, went through the A-words and spotted “Ambrosia,” a revered substance served to the Greek gods alternately referred to as food or drink … yeah, I think they went with the right name … fun etymology and though their “Holdin’ On To Yesterday” is headed down the KERN chart at #14, the lead single from their debut self-titled album is a great end-of-Summer song. ♪ … I keep holdin' on to yesterday | I keep holdin' on enough to say | That I'm wrong, wrong, wrong | To keep holdin' on … ♪      

♪ September 2025 Music Events & More ♪   

Since I have often referred to early Rock & Roll as a melting pot of all music that came before, it’s worth mentioning that September is Classical Music Month. The link is for the official designation in 1994, so no real sponsoring site. Just tick through our September songs and I’m sure you’ll find at least one that obviously utilizes Classical Music.
       Just last month (August), I featured the Carpenters’ “Solitaire” written by Neil Sedaka, in 39 and Holding’s article. He was a big fan of Chopin and integrated the classical pianist’s musical artistry into the ballad. Also mentioned is Barry Manilow’s “Could It Be Magic,” still on this month’s charts, in which he drew heavily on Chopin, with a note-for-note intro. So don’t turn your nose up at Classical Music—ask instead, how can you incorporate it into your own music? 

Thursday ~ September 25^th: Don’t know why, but the original sponsor for National One-Hit Wonder Day gave up on this fun, annual recognition day. No worries—I found a couple of fun sites for you to explore and remember, especially for September! Look for the Amazing Rhythm Aces’ “Third Rate Romance” (#4/KERN) and “Your Love” by Graham Central Station, or here for even more tunes classified as a band or artist’s only Top 40 Hit.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1975 ~ KERN/Bakersfield, California … are you ready for some expansive, flowing, Psychedelic Seventies’ Radio survey art? Everything seemed larger than life in the middle of the decade, including our expression of graphics. You wouldn’t expect a dusty town in central California to produce such entertaining art! Their Super Comics survey is a delight with fun caricatures of DJs Jay J. Jackson and Russ Gerber. Too bad there isn’t an artist’s signature to acknowledge. “The sounds of music can be heard from Studio ‘J’!”
       And maybe you’ll notice the Royal Copy and Printing shop ad with the query, “Inflation gotcha?” Yes, prices were an issue even … 50 Years Ago this Month in Rock & Roll Radio! Where were you that groovy day when your radio played …
